How I work...

I begin each piece by tearing rag paper into shapes, then pasting the shapes together into a free-form collage, often leaving holes through the surface and the edges ragged. I want my paper to take an active role in the process. I like to think of the shaped paper as a painting in its own right. Next I paint the surface of the collage with acrylics, at times continuing to tear and paste as I work. I add texture by using old dried paint and molding paste. Most recently I'm adding colored pencil to the mix, juxtaposing soft pencil lines against strong acrylic brushstroke. I twist and bend my paper causing it to break free from the 2-dimensional plane thus bringing my work more fully into the realm of sculpture.
