Jane Sherrill Colored Pencil
Statement Events Resume Press Contact Over the years I’ve come to experience life as a dense web of shadings and markings and it is this that I depict in my work. I’m interested in how opposing views can exist simultaneously without compromising their separate natures. To explore these ideas, I tear old drawings and paintings into strips which I then weave together to form new collages on which I apply my colored pencils. The weaving juxtaposes random rectangles of colors and markings against one another. Next it is my challenge to reconcile all the separate sections and make them work as a fully integrated whole. I do this by applying my colored pencils to the surface—at times that entails drawing on top of paint and sometimes adding shavings from my sharpened pencils. I work slowly, focusing on one piece at a time, thickly covering the surface with colored pencil marks and shadings. I work the pencil into the painted surface to reveal the markings left by the paint. I think of each piece is a window onto a dense world teeming with life.
